A Brief History...
Birth Haven's original structure was a two and one-half story wood frame dwelling of approximately 2,500 sq. ft.. It was purchased in 1995 and has served Birth Haven well. Several years ago, however, it became evident more space was required to:
- better conduct our Life Skills Training and Education Program and all its activities
- provide more pleasant living arrangements for the residents
- hold private and group counseling sessions
Originally there were four large bedrooms for a maximum of nine women, often with new babies. The combination living room with dining area was too small (could hold only six people) and was exposed to the front entrance, providing no privacy for the women. Also no privacy existed for a mother returning from the hospital to bond with her new baby and where the baby would not disturb others. The food pantry, washer, and dryer were all located in the basement that could only be accessed by steep stairs...not too safe for pregnant women.
...And now...
The new addition is designed solely to improve existing facilities so as to enhance the services, not to increase overall bed capacity. Like the original building, it is two and a half stories that has provided approximately 1800 sq. ft. of new usable space.
This expansion consists of five new rooms to provide enhanced living areas and proper space for the skills and education activities. The first floor contains a second bedroom (15' x 13') for resident staff, a family room (15' x 18') where the women can gather and relax with privacy, a food pantry (8' x 6') next to the kitchen, and a new bathroom next to the family room.
The second floor features a 20' x 24' Life Skills room where all can assemble comfortably to attend classes, hold group meetings, and perform the activities and crafts involved with the program. A new bedroom (10' x 13') in this area will be reserved for new mothers with their babies to bond and have privacy. Also there is now a suitable office for the social worker where she can meet privately with one or more residents and be assured of privacy and confidentiality.
