Criteria for Becoming a Resident at Birth Haven
Birth Haven welcomes young women and teens from throughout New Jersey and environs, without regard to age, race, creed, nationality, financial ability or marital status. Birth Haven is one of the few transitional homes in the area that welcomes minors.
To participate in the Birth Haven program, a young woman is first encouraged to contact a local Birth Right office, crisis pregnancy center, church, doctor, guidance counselor or social service agency to act as her referent. The referring agency of professional will then contact Birth Haven, participate in pre-screening, and arrange for an interview and psycho-social assessment at Birth Haven. When a client’s references have been checked and all the paperwork is completed, a moving-in date is scheduled. Birth Haven has a two-week trial period during which time a young woman can decide if Birth Haven is the right place for her and Birth Haven can see if the young woman accurately represented herself.
Criteria:

Client should have referral agency such as Birth Right, pregnancy crisis center, church, physician, guidance counselor or social service agency. If a young women is unable to connect with any of these referral agencies, she should contact Birth Haven directly

Client must have written proof of pregnancy

Client must provide a copy of her Birth Certificate and Social Security Card

Clients who are minors must have parent/guardian’s written permission to reside at Birth Haven

Client must have current medical insurance or be eligible for Medicaid

Client must be willing to work towards her high school diploma or GED, to find and keep paid employment, or to volunteer. School transfers must be completed prior to admission into Birth Haven.

Client must be free from current drug/alcohol abuse and must agree to participate in appropriate programs if there is a history of addiction

Client or parent/guardian if a minor must make financial arrangements with the Executive Director regarding contributions to Birth Haven.

Client must provide three adult personal references one of whom must be a professional (clergy, teacher, employer, therapist, etc.)

Client must agree to a psycho-social assessment by Birth Haven’s licensed Social Worker.

Client must have a ‘responsible party’ who will agree to accept immediate discharge of the client if she chooses to leave Birth Haven.

Client must agree to participate in weekly individual counseling sessions and weekly group session.

Client must agree to actively working towards responsibility and independence and participate in all the Life Skills classes scheduled by Birth Haven

Client must agree to urine screening at interview, intake and at any other time during her residence at Birth Haven.
