Education at Birth Haven
Birth Haven believes that attainment of a High School Diploma or GED is essential to helping a young woman achieve a secure and independent future, whether she chooses to place her baby for adoption or parent her child. All women at Birth Haven who have not yet graduated from High School or received their GED must commit to pursuing that goal.
Women who wish to continue in High School would attend Newton High School (973-383-7392 www.newtonnj.org ) and must have completed the necessary school transfers prior to moving into Birth Haven. This is usually accomplished by the parent or guardian and the young woman’s sending school. Additional assistance can be provided by the Case Manager or Social Worker at Birth Haven (973-579-7809).
Women who wish to study for their GED may register for classes at Sussex County Community College, Newton (973-300-2150 www.sussex.edu at the Learning Center) or through programs at Project Self Sufficiency 973-383-5129.
Women who have already achieved a high school diploma or GED and wish to continue with educational or vocational classes in keeping with their career goals while awaiting their baby’s birth, may enroll at Sussex County Community College following completed tuition arrangements.
